Wearable Toys: Disney Playmation
With a smart system of toys and wearables to ignite children’s imagination, Disney, with Hasbro partnership, winks at Sci-Fi action toys through its big brands: Marvel’s Avengers, Lucas Film’s Star Wars and Frozen. With Playmation, Disney Consumer Products aims to offer children the experience of physical play using digital toys without having to look at a screen.
With parents more than happy to see their children physically active, the first set of the line, Avengers, is expected to hit select retailers and the Disney online store starting this fall and the others will follow soon after. In parallel with the launch of the kits, an AvengersNet app will also be available which will allow you to have acces to new missions, locations and characters.
The first pack to be released from the Playmation kits line is the Avengers Starter pack which contains five toys that interact with each other: The Avenger Gear, (Repulsor, Iron Man’s ARC powered palm blaster) two power activators (that receive the signals from your repulsor and sense your actions) and two action figures- one hero (Captain America) and one villain (Iron Skull).
Once you wear the Repulsor, and place the figures on the activators, you hear J.A.R.V.I.S (Stark’s digital butler) speaking a quick tutorial on how to control your gear and then starting your first mission (so basically you are fighting against palm sized figures with life-size weapons). The gears and the kits are designed for children 6 to 12 years old, but they have adjustable straps to be worn by adults as well.
All the toys in the kits (and others you can purchase separately) communicate with the repulsor wirelessly through Bluetooth connection. The Repulsor has also vibration capabilities along with movie sound effects each time you press a button to activate a different weapon. The repulsors can also be used separately from the kits if you have another friend wearing one. In that case, it’s a one-on-one combat. So, for example, you may purchase the Hulk hands which have obviously different powers than the repulsor.
Currently the system allows only two gears to be played simultaneously; but the company will probably come up with a solution which more heroes can play at the same time. If that happens and too many heroes are around, they’ll have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise “Hulk smash Elsa!”
