R.E.V. :Human skills vs. AI on track
The pack comes with two cars. Paired through Bluetooth and controlled from an iOS or Android app, R.E.V allows you to play in various modes which include chasing, racing, combat or just plain driving. From inside the app you can pair your own car and battle against your friends, or set one to go in AI mode if you lack any company.
The battle between the cars is quite lifelike; you get bumped by the other car and your drive is impaired. In battle mode the cars also have various weapons that allows to shoot and damage your opponent. Gauges on your mobile’s screen show the status and damage of your cars as well as allowing you to change the weapons, game mode, etc. Both the cars and your mobile warn you with physical and sound effects when, for instance, you get damage. Your weapons are also enhanced over time, from light machine gun to tractor beam or land mines.
An advantage with R.E.V cars is that they do not require any special track to run. They are, albeit slower, able to move even on your living room carpet but a smooth surface is preferrable so that they can demonstrate manouvers.
The cars have built in BeaconSense™ technology, a kind of GPS which allow them to understand their own positions, surroundings and the other cars. This feature allows them to chase one another or move around without wandering cluelessly the room. A smart ramp is also available as an accessory which cars can detect and jump over in the course of whatever the playing mode is set to. The R.E.V system is not limited in terms of the number of cars that can be run simultaneously, meaning you can even have 10 cars chasing 5 cars or vice versa. Davin Sufer, CTO of the company points out that the maximum number of cars you can play in a session depends on the performance of the mobile device you have rather than the limitation of the system itself. R.E.V is easy on the pocket as well; the pack costs a mere $99.90 in the US, a fair enough for a pair of smart cars. R.E.V will be available around 3rd quarter this year.
The creator of R.E.V is WowWee, also the winner of 2015 TOTY award in the innovative toy category with their balancing AI robot, MiP. The company is all about AI. MiPosaur, Robosapien and Tipster are among their robo-toys but the company is thinking of a whole ecosystem of autonomous toys from cars and dinos to multicopters who are able to recognise and interact with each other.
